The fair runs at Somerset House from
October 15 to 18, with a Press and VIP Preview on October 15 and public opening
from October 16.
Born in Oyo in 1998, Oniosun studied Fine
and Applied Arts at Obafemi Awolowo University, graduating in 2022. Her
practice uses simplified, abstracted figures to explore companionship,
identity, femininity and mental health. Rather than relying on detailed facial
representation, she uses gesture, posture and thickly worked surfaces to convey
emotion.
Works such as Girls Like Us, Dream Girls and pieces from her Sisi Eko and Don’t Touch My Hair series reflect her continuing interest in the experiences and representation of women.
Oniosun’s exhibition record spans Nigeria,
the United States, France and the United Kingdom. She was also the winner of
the 2024 MANI Art Competition for Women Artists.
Her presentation with DozieArts at 1-54
London follows earlier international appearances and brings her paintings to
another audience outside Nigeria. At Somerset House, her work will form part of
a wider presentation of contemporary African art and its diasporas.
For DozieArts, founded by Nigerian-born Vincent Chidozie Ugokwe, the presentation continues the gallery’s work with contemporary African artists on the international art fair circuit. The gallery has previously shown Oniosun’s work at the Hamptons Fine Art Fair and 1-54 New York.
