Alexis shows Faces and Places

Paintings by six Nigerian artists will be on view at Alexis Galleries this weekend. The exhibition titled Faces and Places opens on Saturday, April 21, 2018. The opening ceremony holds from 5pm to 9pm at 282 Akin Olugbade Street, Off Idowu Martins, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria.

Writers meet this Saturday

A new gathering of writers, WIN, is to hold its second monthly meeting on Saturday, April 14. It is a forum for writers to share their passion and belong to a family of closely-knit writers with opportunities for fellowships and residencies at home and abroad.

The meeting is to hold at QuickSpace Hall, 44, Community Rd, Off Allen Avenue-Ikeja at 12noon.

New members are welcome. 

How We Finally Die opens at the National Museum

How We Finally Die, an exhibition of remarkable paintings by contemporary Nigerian artist Akintunde Odesola with disturbing images of children visibly ravaged by hunger and destitution occasioned by war and civil unrest. Also with iconic figures like Maya Angelou, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Chinua Achebe and so on, opens on Saturday, April 21 by 2:00pm at National Museum, Onikan, Lagos, Nigeria.

Kudowor takes over Ghana with...

This work and others will be on view at the Ano Gallery (Friday March 16), Berj Gallery (Tuesday March 20) and Artists Alliance Gallery (Thursday March 22), in Accra, Ghana.

Kudowor is one of Ghana's most respected and applauded contemporary artists. He studied at the College of Art, University of Science and Technology, Ghana. He graduated in 1981 with a first class honours degree in fine art.

Born in 1957 in Takoradi, Ghana, Wisdom ‘Wiz’ Kudowor’s painting career spans over 30 years. His bold paintings reference the traditional forms and symbols of Ghana’s rich cultural history, while also drawing inspiration from cubist and futurist styles.

Kudowor instantly recognisable style of abstracted figures, scenes and shapes are created using a palette knife and roller brush. The use of these tools – the brush for laying large areas of colour and the knife for more detailed work – is a technique he developed early on in his practice.

His public commissions include a relief mural at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra, Ghana. He has exhibited widely across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the US. His works can be found in a number of international collections including the Ministry of Culture, People’s Republic of China; the African American Museum, Texas, USA; Ghana National Museum, Accra, Ghana; and the Osaka Prefecture Contemporary Art Collection, Osaka, Japan.

Ronald known as Ron Mueck was born in 1958 is an Australian sculptor working in the United Kingdom.

Born in 1958 to German parents in Melbourne, Australia, Ron Mueck grew up in the family business of puppetry and doll-making. He worked initially as a creative director in Australian children’s television, before moving to America to work there in film and advertising.  In 1996, he was asked by Paula Rego to make a small figure of Pinocchio for her group exhibition Spellbound: Art and Film, at the Hayward Gallery, London.
